ZTNB 2007

ZTNB stands for Zero To None Bunch. It’s a group of friends getting together to play music, share their thoughts through song, drink beer, and have a good time.

It started as a great idea that we thought would never happen (zero to none chance of happening). We're too busy, too lazy, too old, etc.

But look at us now. It's turned into a really fun event. We have all progressed as muscians and songwriters, as well becoming better friends.

It’s been a while, but we had a Z. Doug Duhon came in to town and just turned 40, as well as David Dye just turning 40, so we had some birthday festivities. It’s just Rob and Robbie left to join the club. We have a little while to prepare.

David Harbour, Doug and Doug Stouffer started off the musical portion of the night with a improv jam. In my book these are some heavy hitters and I was digging it. I joined in and we played a little while, attempting some of the songs Doug Stouffer and I play in our “Hybrid” set. That was really fun.

David Dye played a really good set, even though there was something wrong with his singing. I can’t figure it out…. hmmmm. I think he had the wrong pre-amp or something. (lol)

Harbour and I played some tunes, and that was just a tease as I really want to play some shows with 49th Vibration, but don’t get me started there.

Rob played a really good set and has a new Taylor that sounded great, but I don’t think the electronics are that great. I’m still pissed that they stole your Huffy Pro Thunder.

Robbie played last and did it up right. I still can’t believe he admitted to stealing trucks in one of his songs. Although that’s nothing to thinking he should have “left her in the pool”.

Another Z went down at Rob’s uncle’s lake house. We love going out there. It’s a great little hide-a-way that’s close by.

ZTNB

Doug, Jared, and Becca made the trip. Jared just turned 18, so I’m sure that’s a trip for Doug, as well as making me feel old of course.

Doug played his full kit, which is also cool, but we needed some bass. I tried to play a little during Rob’s set, but the bass kept cutting out… oh well.

Neil and Christy came by for a while, but Neil did not play.

Neil, Robbie, and Rob

Lisa made it out too. She had been busy doing school work, but was able to hear the second round of sets, besides Rob, because he did not play a second set… well, not until the next morning, which was pretty cool to wake up to. It was kind of surreal, as I was hearing him in my sleep at first.

We did one round of 3 song sets and tried the rapid fire thing, which was cool, but we couldn’t really get a groove going, or that’s how it was for me. I thought Rob and Robbie’s sets were great, but I know I felt like Doug and I didn’t start jelling until the 3rd song. But my second set was long and we were able to jam a bit, as well as play some of my songs.

The only slight bummer was that it has been raining so much that the mosquitoes were out in force, and I didn’t like hanging outside. Rob and Doug spent some time on the porch talking and smoking cigars later in the evening and I just couldn’t hang with the bugs, but Robbie, Lisa, Tonya, and I did hang out and BS’d forever inside.

Rob put some dog food in the backyard to feed the wildlife and sure enough we had a raccoon come up and munched on and off for most of the night. It was pretty cool.

I don’t know if I felt like I played that great or not. I guess I did OK.

I did try and new beer that was really good. "Ayinger Dark Wheat"

We did ZTNB at my house. Lisa cooked some pork stuff for sandwiches along with a bunch of fixings. Robbie, Tonya, and Robi came over right at 6 pm, with Rob coming along shortly after. April came over also and she set up a small kit, and lastly Harbour and Allison came over and 49th Vibration played a short set. We had played about 8 songs when the cops knocked on the door. It was around 10:15 pm, and they said they could here the music 7 housed down the block. So that was the end of the 49th Vibration set. April played percussion instead of drums and we played one last song (Time).

Robbie played a great set. He was complaining about his allergies, but I thought he really played and sang well.

Rob played his set late, but played and sang well. At this point April, Harbour, and Allison had all left.

Sunday morning Lisa and Tonya made breakfast tacos. We hung around and watch “Best in Show” and then started talking about lunch/dinner. We decide to make Monte Cristo sandwiches. We also make taquitos and fried mashed potatoes…basically, fried everything. It was awesome.

This was an outdoor Z at Neil's pad. We all met Neil's new woman, Christy, who was very nice. The temperature was right, the people were right, except for one freakin' women that talked and talked and talked. My God, she would not shut up while people were playing. What a rude Biotch.

I played bass on Neil's set and that was fun. We did jam a while with Doug before the sets started and that's always cool.

I played last and played "Cheat" and "Goodness Gracious" which I had not played in a while. I played a new original called "The World Will be Just Fine". I started on my fourth song. It was a song Robbie and I wrote probably 6 or 7 years ago called "More Than Nothing". I made it to the first chorus when the cops showed up and shut us down. It was pretty funny actually.

We did sit around and play afterwards, but without drums or PA.

It was a great night, except no Lisa, Katie, or Avery.

I got to the lakehouse in the early afternoon and Doug, Becca, Robbie, Tonya, Robi, and Robert were all there already. Doug had come in the night before and stayed at Robert’s apartment, and so did the Wilsons, so they all got an early start.

It was rainy and cold when I got there and stayed that way all night for the most part. Doug had brought me some Don’s cracklins and boudin from Carencro, so I quickly broke into the cracklins and got the boudin warming in the crock pot.

Unfortunately, Lisa and the girls could not make it, so that was a big bummer for me.

Tonya made spaghetti with Rob’s step dad’s famous sauce and we had salad with his just a famous salad dressing.

As I am unloading my truck I noticed something very odd. I could not find my guitar. I freakin’ left my guitar at home…. Dang it. I start calling Neil, who was that at the lakehouse yet, and then I called Lisa to ask her to take my guitar in from the garage, where I left it. She told me she was going to the mall, which was not too far from us, so Doug and I went met her to pick up my guitar.

We celebrated my birthday with cake and presents. It was very nice of everyone. I am now the proud owner of a tan suede jogging suite and a ¾ bottle of bright blue Boones Farm wine.

For some reason, we finally got the music going early for a change. I don’t know if that had anything to do with anything, but musically it was one of the best nights ever. Everyone just sounded “on”.

We did some early improve right off the bat with Doug on sax, me on guitar, and Robbie on drums. Rob stepped up to the mic and threw down some vocals. It was so cool. Doug was really feeling it.

Neil and I did a soulful rendition of “Help” by The Bealtes at the end of the night. We actually played a lot after the sets were done. We had some long jams with Doug on sax. It was so cool.
