ZTNB stands for Zero To None Bunch. It’s a group of friends getting together to play music, share their thoughts through song, drink beer, and have a good time.

It started as a great idea that we thought would never happen (zero to none chance of happening). We're too busy, too lazy, too old, etc.

But look at us now. It's turned into a really fun event. We have all progressed as muscians and songwriters, as well becoming better friends.

Lisa and I sprung the engagement news on the ZTNB gang at our Thanksgiving turkey fry extravaganza.

The rest of the day was really good. Robbie took the reins and fried up two big birds, and Lisa made a ton of fixin's. We had lots of pies also, and Tonya made some beer bread. That was really good also. Lisa and Tonya really took control of the kitchen stuff. That was very nice of them and kept everyone fat and happy.

Rebecca and Jose came over and listened to a couple of the sets. Mine and Robbie's, to be specific. That was really nice having them over. I don't think many of my friends know many of Lisa's friends, so that was cool to have some cross pollination there. Worlds colliding a bit, but I think that's a good thing.

The only bummer was that Doug and his crew could not make it. We all really missed them. I hope he makes it for New Years.

We had a scary ZTNB Halloween party. David Harbour came out and gave us some deity confrontation, as we had Jesus and Jesus as the party. Armageddon did not ensue, and we all got along. Everyone player and sang great. It was fun jammin' with Harbour and listening to him play. Hearing Doug and David go off, we so cool. Pretty much every jam dropped.

We were way past due for a good old fashion ZTNB. I think we did it right. There were some really memorable moments. Doug accompanied everyone one on the mini drum kit, and Neil played a lot of cello and bass. The rhythm section was really kicking and added a lot to everyone's set. I played some bass also, which was really fun. It was a blast.

Robbie gave us a new version of "Chicken Tacos". It was pure gold. It started out as a song about "Neil's Bitch", but morphed into the ever so familiar "Chicken Tacos".

Robert kicked out a version of Bob Schneider's "Queen UK", and I great sing-along version of Robbie's "Pitiful Loser". That was fun. Rob did a great fuck-nugget impersonation.

Robbie's broken thumb made for some great front man, stand up without his guitar, nothing to hide behind, moments. It was really fun to see him stand up there and take control of the crowd.

I got up and accompanied Robbie on guitar for a few tunes. "Pitiful Loser" being a highlight. A close second was Bob's "World Exploded". I think Robbie sang that great.

Neil's set was really good also. I played bass and it had a decent "band" feel to it, which was great. I hope I added something with my playing and did not take away anything. I was learning the songs on the fly, as was he during my set, but I thought both were great.

Robert had a new friend there, but he did not hold back and gave the crowd what they wanted… and more (Queen UK, Pitiful Loser, etc.).

And after "manning up", breaking strings, cops, and improv acapella renditions of songs of personal torture and despair, there was a Jack in the Box run. Ah yes…early morning grease and fat.

Troy's Set:
This Love (Maroon 5..or 6…or 9)
The way life's suppose to be (Bob Schneider)
Goodness Gracious (Kevin Gilbert)
Last Good Taste (Dayna Kurtz)
Can't make it Right (Troy Thibodeaux)
Is this it? (Troy Thibodeaux)
Victim (Troy Thibodeaux)
Knocking on the Door (Troy Thibodeaux)
Lisa's Song (Troy Thibodeaux)

The 2nd Annual ZTNB Crawfish Festival was a raving success. I picked up 60 lbs. of choice crawfish from Captain Dave's in Plano. There were $2.05 a lb., but they were really big and full. David (Doug's brother) came up from Carencro LA and did the cooking and they were perfect. David brought Amanda and the kids, and along with the rest of the ZTNB family, including Ashley and Justin, the party was on.

Doug has the perfect outdoor facility for a crawfish boil/ztnb party. Doug and David made a cool stage in the back yard. I would say it was our largest stage to date, as we actually had room for everyone on stage at the same time.

As the day approach we decided to get together and practice some of the "band" tunes. We made our debut as "Runny the Pooh". We got in a practice on Thursday night. This was the fist time we played since January I think. So we decided that was enough to go ahead and play at the ZTNB party two days later. I'm not going to say this was a mistake, but we were real shaky. That being said, it was really fun and it felt good. We played our hits:
Break my fall
Words
Jonas
She loves you
Lead me on
This is me
Victim

After the band thing was done we moved on to the ZTNB acoustic show. We had our white elephant gift exchange somewhere in there. That was fun too. There were some much-coveted "Girls Gone Wild" DVDs that made the rounds, and much to Jared's disappointment, they did not end up in his hands.

We started the acoustic show with Doug's friend Homero playing an all-original instrumental set. This guy was great. He had a very cool style and some excellent tunes. He played Doug's acoustic guitar and it sounded so good that I opted to play his guitar too. It was a nice Ibanez that had a great electric sound to it. My pickup was thought to be broken, but I found out it was not????

I can't remember, but I think I played next. I thought I sounded pretty good, but my voice was, once again, not at its best. I made some stupid mistakes though. I really need to concentrate more, or practice more.

Doug played his full drum kit with all our sets. He really added a lot to the sets. Doug also, for the first time ever, played an acoustic "guitar" set. Yes, he played and sang some covers and originals. He got me and Robbie to get up and do some improve with him on one song. That was very cool. This was a coming-out for Doug. It almost felt like a poetry jam at times. He poured it out and seemed very improved. I'm guessing a lot was but, but I know he also worked some things out before hitting the stage. It was very cool and it seemed very cathartic for him. At least I hope it was. I know for me it is, even when it's never racking… it still is liberating.

Troy's set:
Lisa's song - Troy Thibodeaux
Still I wait - Troy Thibodeaux
Pink triangle - Weezer
Before the dawn - Judas Priest
Livin' thing - ELO
Telephone line - ELO
Can't make it right - Troy Thibodeaux
The same one - Troy Thibodeaux
Is this it? - Troy Thibodeaux
Knocking on the door - Troy Thibodeaux

First let me say that we missed Doug, and whatever excuse he uses is pretty lame…well, not really because there's a ton of legit reasons, but we did miss you there. It was very cool that Marshiela, Jared, and Becca did show up to have some fun and be stupid with the rest of us.

We took the show to Neil's back yard. It was another great setup on the trainer with an added riser. But that was nothing compared to the KICK-ASS lights that Robert bought and brought. Very cool stuff. We had a real stage feel.

Robbie had some excuse about not picking up his guitar in a month, but was really great. I think he is full of shit…well I know he's that, but I think he lied also. He played a very cool set, and stood up and moved around like a rock star….sort of.

Robert's set was moving as always, and with a added bonus, as Neil played bass on his instantly famous, Outlaw Steel, epic.

Mark came again and played some very cool instrumentals. His pieces are really advanced with lots of counter point. He has a great finger style technique…one day I'll practice and learn to play with my fingers properly.

Neil was a gracious host as well as throwing down a killer set. He always says he's not prepared, and has nothing, but if this is true, and he does one day really work on his songs, we are all in trouble. We will probably want to just have Neil Brincks shows each month. But really, he had a great set, and threw in a new Julian Coryell song, which is greatness.

To make the whole ZTNB vibe even better than ever, Mike Morgan came into town and fit in with the bunch like a glove. I can't tell you how much fun it was to hang with him, and to have him meet Lisa and the girls, Robbie and fly, Rob, Neil, Doug's fly, Mark, etc.

We all (but Robbie and fly) crashed at Neil's and had a Mother's Day lunch at Chili's the next day, which was torture for a while because of the hangover mixed with a really long wait.

Success once again!

We were back to the core group for this trimmed down version of ZTNB. We were hoping Doug was going to unleash his singer/songwriter set on us, but it didn't happen.Doug was actually there recording the show and listening. He didn't even play. I don't think that will ever happen again. His participation was much missed. I missed having the rest of the gang there, but it was a nice change. Everyone played and sang well. Robert's "Marrissa" song is becoming one of my favorites of his. Neil's singing was great as usual and even pushed it a little more. Neil's song's just grow and grow on me. I liked them from the start, but really underrated them. The chord choices and melodies are really strong...not to mention the lyrics. Robbie had a great set too. He has a way of really making cover songs his own. His originals are great and he has a unique style. For some reason I think he was going to try and get away with not playing "pitiful loser", but we would have none of that.

The ZTNB crew hit the road. We headed down to Louisiana to do our first road show. We were invited to a ZTNB/Crawfish Boil/Mardi Gras party. Doug’s brother David, opened up his home to us, and showed off his Cajun hospitality. David supplied a custom built stage, tons of crawfish, lots of good people, and a death-defying fire show, Gene Simmons style.

We started the weekend off by going to the Lafayette Children’s Mardi Gras Parade on Saturday. After the parade it was back to David’s to start the preparations for the evening. We had such a good time. David, Amanda, and their families and friends made us feel welcome and showed us how to throw a party. I had some of my close friends from Lafayette come out too. I can’t tell them how much it meant to me for them to be there. I know that they didn’t know many people there, but they came out anyway, and I hope they had a good time.

My cousin Brett and his family were there, and my nephew Andrew kept the beat with Doug for most of the night.

Mike and Tammy’s son Luke also kept a close eye and ear on the performances. He was rocking from the front row. He didn’t care for the smoke machine though.

We had a ZTNB guest artist perform. My friends Dave and Nicole came out and played a set. Dave played some great tunes. His Zeppelin was dead on as usual, and his “free” dog song was a crowd pleaser. David saved the day with his minidisk, as our computer crashed and we would not have had any recordings from the night.

After the main show was over and the crowd thinned, we stayed up and jammed some more. I left about 2:30 a.m. and the rest of the guys were still going strong.

Everyone had great sets. I would say everyone should be proud of their performances. Doug kept us together as usual and I think had his best contribution to date, although I think the more he knows our songs, the more he cuts loose. That being said, we don’t play the same songs every time, so it’s always a challenge for him.

We followed that night up with the Carencro Mardi Gras parade. We had a great time there. We could tons of beads and the kids did too. Amanda’s family welcomed us into their Mardi Gras party. They were a block off of the parade root and had a huge pot of gumbo along with boudin, and lots of other food and drinks. They were very, very nice people and made us feel very welcome (this is a re-occurring theme isn’t it?).

The 2004 ZTNB season has started. Our first get together of the year was a good one. We all complained that we had nothing new to play, and that we hadn’t worked on our songs.

The ZTNB electric band made our second appearance. We did not rehearse at all since the last time we got together on 12-20-04. It was rough again, but it was fun as hell. It feels good to rock!

Robbie started the accoustic ball rolling with a cool experimental intro, and used an accompanying CD that he played and sang along to. It was really cool. He played a new tune and some of his hits, and after much begging and pleading, he played “Pitiful Loser”…always a crowd favorite.

I played a couple of new covers. I worked up “Levon” by Elton John, and “Rest in Pieces” by Saliva. I had some lyric brain farts, but besides that I think my set was decent. I bought a pickup for my acoustic and used that for the first time. I like being able to stand and not having to always be next to the mic.

It took more begging, but Neil played a set, which ending up being one of his best ever. There was something a little extra in his voice, or something. Whatever it was, it was a great set.

Robert played his nylon string electric (Chet) for the first time. It had a great sound, and he looked and sounded very comfortable playing it. Robert had a few new twists and played a great set.

Neil played cello on a few of Robbie’s songs. It always adds depth and warmth to the songs. I wish he had played more.

Doug actually played his kit…or a modified version of it. It really sounded great. He really blew me away at times with his simplistic complexity. During many of the off-the-cuff dramatic pauses, he was right there. For my set, he seemed to be one step ahead of me on breaks and pauses. It was really amazing.

There was also a quick B-Day celebration for me and Becca. That was very nice and unexpected.
